Volume VI · MDMA
The sixth volume of Richard L. Pope's nine-volume audit follows MDMA through history, chemistry, subjective effects, harms and therapeutic investigation — a molecule that has travelled through laboratories, dance floors and consulting rooms.
Its organising question is how a claim earns its place: what was administered, who was studied, what changed, compared with what, and over which interval.

The governing principle
MDMA-assisted therapy is not the same intervention as MDMA alone, and a defined research preparation is not the same as a substance encountered outside that setting. Those distinctions run throughout the volume, and each chapter keeps the conditions of the observation in view.
Volume VI structure
An introduction, twenty-four chapters and chapter source notes — moving from history and bodily effects to social experience, harms and clinical research, then to follow-up, blinding, professional responsibility, regulation and other therapeutic uses.
Before Ecstasy; From Private Rooms to Public Dance Floors; A Name on a Tablet; A Substance Between Categories — from a 1912 chemical intermediate to what a market sample can establish.
What the Molecule Does and The Body Clock — transporters rather than receptors, and following a swallowed molecule through the body.
Feeling Close; Music Touch and the Social World; Fear Memory and Emotional Openness — what empathy measures, and the results that complicate the story.
The Following Days; The Body Overwhelmed; Other Drugs Other Conditions; Neurotoxicity; Repeated Use — each harm given its own measurement.
Why PTSD; What the Treatment Contains; Early Clinical Evidence; Phase III; What Lasts — from the first pilots to the pivotal trials and their follow-up.
Unblinding; Trust Power and Protection; The Regulatory Test; Beyond PTSD; What the Evidence Can Carry.
Apparatus
Numbered citations lead to source notes collected at the back of the book, with numbering starting again in each chapter. The notes identify study designs, limitations and selected source checks.
The volume is a selective, evidence-led investigation, not a systematic review. Selected checks were undertaken through 2 November 2026; that date does not imply exhaustive coverage of all research or regulatory developments up to that day.
Citation does not imply that every table or supplement was checked. Dated regulatory decisions are discussed in their historical context, and later developments may change the interpretation of material in this edition.
